How the interest is calculated

  1. The rate for each period is the yearly percent divided by the compounds per year. Compounded yearly, 5% is used once a year.
  2. The future amount is the starting amount times (1 + yearly rate divided by compounds per year), raised to compounds times years. 1000 at 5% a year, compounded yearly for 10 years, is shown as 1628.89.
  3. The same 1000 at 5% for 1 year, compounded yearly, is 1050. Compounded monthly, the yearly rate is divided by 12.
  4. Interest earned is the future amount minus the starting amount.
  5. The starting amount can be 0 or more. The percent can be 0 to 100. Years can be greater than 0 and up to 100. Compounding can be 1 to 365 times a year. Amounts are shown to 2 decimal places. A comma is a thousands separator, so 1,000 is 1000.

Extra deposits are not included. Taxes and fees are not added. Daily compounding uses 365 periods a year. This page uses the standard formula and does not fetch a bank quote.
