Slug

Example URL

The slug updates as you type. It is not sent anywhere.

How the slug is built

  1. The title is lowercased with standard Unicode case mapping.
  2. An ampersand becomes the word and. Apostrophes are removed, so don't becomes dont.
  3. Accent marks are stripped, so café becomes cafe. Letters outside the basic Latin alphabet that have no plain equivalent are dropped.
  4. Spaces, punctuation, and other symbols become a single hyphen. Extra hyphens at the start or end are removed. Numbers stay.
  5. The example URL is the site you type, plus a slash, plus the slug. If the site is not a valid address, only the slug is shown.

A slug is the readable piece of a path. In https://example.com/guides/title-tags the slug is title-tags. A short slug that says what the page is about is easier to read and to share. It does not decide where the page ranks. Read the URL structure guide before you invent a long keyword path. If the page is already public and you change the slug, add a redirect from the old URL. The redirects guide covers that.

Questions about this generator

What is a URL slug?

The readable part of a path, usually the last segment. In https://example.com/guides/title-tags the slug is title-tags. It is not the whole URL, and it is not a ranking score.

How does this generator build a slug?

It lowercases the text, turns an ampersand into the word and, drops apostrophes, strips accent marks, and replaces every other run of symbols or spaces with one hyphen. Numbers stay. A blank title produces no slug.

Does a slug decide Google rankings?

No. A short slug that matches the page can help a person read the URL. Google does not rank a page because the slug has a keyword. If you change a slug that is already public, add a redirect from the old URL.

Does this tool upload what I paste?

No. The title and the site address stay in the browser. Blogoose does not receive them.
