How the counts work

  1. A word is the text between spaces, tabs, or line breaks. well-known is one word. An empty box is zero words.
  2. Characters includes spaces and line breaks. Characters without spaces drops them. An emoji counts as one character in both.
  3. A sentence is approximate. The counter looks for a period, question mark, or exclamation mark. A draft with words and no ending mark still counts as one sentence.
  4. A paragraph is a block of text. A blank line starts the next one.
  5. Reading time divides the word count by 238 and rounds up. Speaking time uses 150. A short draft still shows 1 minute once it has any words.

Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and this page can disagree on hyphens, footnotes, and punctuation. Use this count as a check of the draft in front of you. If you are writing a title or a meta description for a search result, the SERP preview shows width. The title tag guide explains why a character count is not a Google limit.
